Search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing divide the search results into two areas, the natural or organic results (free) on the left hand side of the page and the advertising results (paid) on the right hand side.

Organic search rankings cannot be purchased, they are the search engine's interpretation of the most relevant pages, from the millions of websites held within their databases. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) works on the organic search results to increase a website's ranking.

The above heatmap which shows which areas of the screen the user's eye is attracted to, the more red the area the longer the time spent. In addition, market research shows that on average the first 10 organic (free) search results receive 90% of the click-through traffic, with the first 4 results accounting for 69% of that traffic.

It is clear to see why both paid search (Pay Per Click) and SEO are so important to a balanced online strategy, and why a significant proportion of digital marketing focus is now being directed at making these two channels work in harmony.
